Book Description
One of the most popular types of medieval manuscript, bestiaries included a great variety of texts and images about beasts, birds, and Christian morals. Using twenty eight manuscripts produced between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, this study links these portrayals to specific social and theological concerns of the day. Special attention is devoted to bestiary characterisations of women and Jews, perceptions of the bestiary by different types of readers, and the changing functions of the genre over the centuries.
